A residence built on the flagpole site. The building was widely hollowed out into the shape of V, and it was made a terrace there. The terrace is open to a shared garden with the parents' house, gently connecting the two households.
敷地は，隣の両親の敷地をL字に取り囲むいわゆる「旗竿」形状をしているため、「旗」の部分に住戸部分として四角い箱のヴォリュームを寄せて配置し、「竿」の部分には両親との共通の空地を確保した。そして、その空地に向けて箱から大きくVの字のヴォリュームをくり貫き、この部分をテラスや駐車スペースとしたが、Vの字にすることによって室内にいても共通の空地、そしてその先の両親の家へと意識や視線が向かう。
内部空間では、さらに家具を使って通り道のようにも使える空間をVの字にくり抜き、その周りに各部屋を配置。Vの字部分の2階床は構造材として透明な板を使用し、上下階で柔らかな光のやりとりをさせている。
This house stands on an L-shaped, or “flagpole,” lot that wraps around a second lot belonging to the resident’s parents. The house consists of a rectangular box located on the “flag” portion of the lot, while the “pole” serves as an open space shared by both households. On the side of the house facing the “pole,” a V-shaped indentation contains the terrace and parking area. Even when residents are inside the house, the V-shape indentation directs their attention and line of sight towards the open space and their parents’ house beyond it.
Inside, furniture and cabinetry carve out another V-shaped space that can be used as a passageway, with rooms arranged around it. The floor of the V-shaped area on the second story is made of a clear slab that allows soft light to filter between the two levels.
